Our Family Room

So, we've been friends now for awhile.  I thought it was time to invite you into my home and let you see my family room.  Please come in and have a seat.  Make yourself comfortable. Can I get you a glass of iced tea?

We live in a two story house and we purposely did not put a television down here.  It's a bit of an awkward shaped room, so furniture placement is a challenge.  Honestly, I've moved the sofas around a few times trying to make it cozy, comfortable and visually appealing. This is just the latest arrangement.  Most days I get the pleasure of listening to my children practice their piano lessons in this room while I work in the kitchen cleaning up or preparing meals. It truly is music to my ears.
I picked up the iron piece above the piano 10 years and 4 houses ago at an awesome boutique that was next door to my husband's workplace at the time. I always find a place for it in my decor.
Up until a couple of months ago I had the same nasty tired pillows I'd had for years sitting on the sofas. I finally found a fun fabric with all the colors I love and made these pillows. They make me smile.  I would have more pillows on the sofas, but I have people in my house that like to "use" the pillows to sit up higher or to support their lower back, if you know what I mean.  So, I keep it relatively simple with just a few pops of color on the sofas.
I am kind of a "set it and forget it" decorator as far as accessories go.  I don't change things much once I find what I like.  I did not get the fiddling gene. My mom is a fiddler. Not a violinist...a fiddler.  She finds fun accessories and tries them here and there and moves them around frequently. She fiddles. Not me. I will switch things up on the mantle for fall and Christmas decorating, but that's about it. The large picture on my mantle was a gift from my best friend years ago.  It's one of my favorite pieces.  The clock was a gift from my husband's uncle, who just happened to be first cousins with Josh Grobin's mother. How's that for some name-dropping! You'd think I could score some concert tickets since we're family and all.
This basket of colorful shiny balls on my coffee table tends to be the starting point for all my decorating endeavors in this room. I picked them up at Hobby Lobby a couple of years ago and still love the different hues represented.
This beautiful lamp is a hand-me-down from my sweet fiddling mom.  She decided she didn't want it anymore and I'm not one to turn down a freebie.  So, here it is in my family room up against a wall that needs some lovin'. It is a long wall with nothing on it at the moment.
There you have it.  Nothing fancy, but it's home to me because the people I love most in the world reside here.  I'm so glad you came by for a visit. I hope you'll come again.  I'm testing out the runner on the coffee table.  What do you think? Should it stay or should it go?

  3. Very comfortable and inviting! Definitely keep the runner on the coffee table. Adds a "layer" of texture! I'm like you in that I put something down and leave it for centuries. I'm trying to be better because I think it's fun to change things up. Plus, I like saying to my husband "Months ago" when he asks "Hey when did you get that?"!!! And Katy Perry is my second cousin and I don't get concert tickets either! What's the point of having a celebrity in the family?!!!

I'm your newest follower and can't wait to hang around and see what other cool stuff you got going on!!

  4. What a lovely room! The corner fireplaces are hard (we have one too!) but you made everything looks gorgeous. Great accessories. I am a set it and forget it girl too...or I was until I started thrifting so much.
