Thrifty Kitchen Island

While I sit here listening to the pitter patter outside, I am so thankful for the Lord's provision.  Not only did we receive some much needed rain over the last couple of days, but He blessed me in the way of a lovely thrifty kitchen island today.
My SIL, Aimee, and I were out looking for bargains at garage sales in her neighborhood today.  We didn't have high hopes as it was already past noon and there had been rain.  After our small hike through the neighborhood, we arrived at the location where I found this beauty.  There were Halloween items piled here and there.  Underneath one of the piles I spied this wooden rolling cart.  Oh, my...I was excited.  It was the exact size I had been looking for for our small kitchen. I asked how much they wanted for it, all the while praying it wouldn't be more than $10. The lady went to ask her mother and came back out saying she'd take ten dollars for it. My heart skipped a beat.  "I'll take it," I exclaimed. I then said a quick prayer thanking God for this gift.
So, I took it home, flipped it over and began the cleaning process.  It had been in the previous owner's family for many years and had been in storage for quite some time.  There were lots of spiderwebs on the underside. It needed some TLC.
I pulled out the Murphy Oil Soap and got to work.  After cleaning it up, I tightened all the bolts holding it together.  It's amazing how sturdy this little thing is. I think it cleaned up nicely. There is a little water damage on the lower shelf, but it's hardly noticeable with a basket of clean dishtowels and some nesting bowls on it.
I have been looking for just such an island ever since we moved into our home four years ago.  There is just not much counter space or storage, especially in the way of drawers (there are only 3), but that's a story for another day.
What I love is that it is on castors, so I can move it wherever I need it.  I'm so excited to get this before the baking season really kicks in.  I can't tell you how many times, while making batches of Christmas cookies, I have wished for an extra place just to set down a cookie sheet.  Finding this thrifty kitchen island was truly a gift. I may end up modifying it a bit later. But for now, I'm just loving it!
By the way, this pretty little vase was found at a second hand boutique a while back.  I loved the delicate lines of it. Another thrifty find! I couldn't resist putting it on my pretty little island.

I know it may seem silly to be giddy over an old discarded piece of furniture, but I do feel like the Lord provided it at just the right time. He knows the desires of our hearts. I know He is faithful in the big things of my life, and it makes my heart sing to see His goodness in the small things too. Wishing you a joy-filled Sunday!

I'm linking up at some of these great parties and

  3. What a great find!!! You were blessed and how pretty it turned out under all the scary spider webs!!

Thank you for visiting my table. You were way too kind.

  4. Very nice! You definitely will appreciate having this extra space when you are cooking a large meal.

I had two tiny, tiny countertops before we remodeled our kitchen. It's tough to cook when you don't have much space but you do learn to clean up as you work.

  5. I love this little island! I wish I had room in my kitchen for one. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I will follow your blog on my RSS feed (I don't see a GFC follow link)

    Have a great day!

  6. Murphy's Oil Soap is great stuff!!! It looks great in your kitchen. We just added some counter space to our kitchen...just in time for canning season and then baking season!!!

  7. Not only were you blessed with an island, it also matches your cabinetry really well!

  8. Great island. I have always wanted a kitchen with an island. My kitchen is way to small. If I added an island I would be able to open my fridge or oven door. :) Thank you for sharing at my Our Favorite Things Link Party. Have a great week.

  9. Oh, I love this story! I've had times that I've felt the very same way-like the round side tables that are in my living room. God is so good!! Thanks for linking up with Making Space Mondays! I hope to see you again next week. -Tabitha

  10. Looks fantastic!! What a great island. Megan

  11. It's an old, discarded piece of furniture that you rescued and gave a new lease on life again, so yes, feeling giddy and prayers of thanks are perfectly appropriate. Congratulations on your find!

  12. Both vase and kitchen island - great finds!

Visiting from Ivy and Elephants WIW.

  13. Ten dollars? What a fantastic find!

  14. What a great find and so practical! If you bake, you can never have enough counter space. I did a brief post on kitchen islands a few weeks ago. When we bought our house, I had hardly any counter space. Really. It was worst than some apartments. We did a semi-renovation and knocked down a half wall and added a peninsula. I don't know how I did without it! You are going to love having this!

I really like your style of writing. Very sweet and down to earth. I see you're a new blogger (like me) so consider me a new follower. (found you on SSS).

  15. Veery nice island!
    Looks great!
Thanks for linking up this week at the Creative Inspirations Party at Embracing Change!
