Secret Ingredient Smoothie

We love smoothies around here. I typically will make them with some plain non-fat yogurt and a bunch of fresh fruit. This week, when I was in the mood for a smoothie, I realized I was out of yogurt. That's when it struck me...The Secret Ingredient Smoothie.
Here's what I used: banana, frozen pineapple chunks, apple juice, oatmeal and cottage cheese. Why cottage cheese? Well, I was out of yogurt and I had cottage cheese on hand from making my Cottage Cheese Pancakes earlier in the week.
There's no real recipe here. I just put a banana, 1/2 cup pineapple chunks, 1/4 cup oatmeal, 1/2 cup cottage cheese, about 1/2 cup of apple juice and some ice in my Vitamix blender and gave a whirl. The result was a creamy, delicious, and filling smoothie.

What I noticed was that this smoothie stuck with me a lot longer than when I just use yogurt. After doing a little research, I found that cottage cheese has almost twice as much protein as yogurt and half as many carbohydrates. I put some oatmeal in it for a little more bulk and fiber. So, instead of adding expensive protein powders or yogurt to your next smoothie, consider adding in some cottage cheese. Your taste buds and waistline just might thank you ;-)
I'm linking up at some of these great parties and

  2. I am so going to try this next week. I love smoothies, too...and I have all the ingredients (besides the pineapple...but I will just substitute apples, grapefuite, or something else....)

  3. Oh wow...what a great idea! I'll be giving this a try. Now if I could only keep cottage cheese in the refrigerator a little kids gobble it up! Maybe I should keep a separate stash in the downstairs fridge.... :) Thanks for sharing this great tip!

  4. Thank you for this recipe. Never thought of cottage cheese. I wanted to use the oatmeal but my hubby don't like it thick.

We may have met by chance...but we become friends by choice.
