Valentine's Day Paper Strip Heart Garland

Valentine's Day Paper Strip Heart Garland
Well, it's mid-January...time to start thinking about putting touches of "love" around the house to celebrate the sweet holiday in February. I had some leftover scraps from my Paper Strip Candy Cane Ornament and thought making this Valentine's Day Paper Strip Heart Garland would be the perfect way to use them up. It is a different look from my 3D Heart Banner I used on last year's mantel.

Here's what you'll need: red and white (card stock)paper strips, stapler, small hole punch (not pictured), and baker's twine.

Cut the strips into the following lengths: red - (1) 1/2" x 6", (2) 1/2" x 11" white - (2) 1/2" x  8"

Line up the bottoms of the strips in this order: white, 11inch red, 6 inch red, 11 inch red, white.

Holding the bottoms, gently peel down the white strip on one side and line it up at the bottom. Next, gently peel down the red strip and line it up at the bottom. Repeat those steps on the other side. Secure at the bottom with a staple.

Punch hole about 1/2" from the top of the center paper strip of the hearts and thread a long piece of baker's twine or thin ribbon through the holes.

I made some smaller single hearts in the same fashion to fill in the garland using more pieces of scrap paper... just (1) 1/2" x 3" white and (2) 1/2" x 5" reds.

There you have it ~ an easy and inexpensive (or free) project to bring some Valentine's Day cheer to your home! If you find yourself stuck at home for a snow day with the kiddos, this is an easy project for them to do too!

I'm not quite sure how the mantel is going to evolve for Valentine's Day, but here is what it looks like right now...a little of this and that. I just can't bear to throw out these gorgeous poinsettias yet. What do you do with your poinsettia plants after Christmas?
