Sometime last year I saw these donut treats floating around the internet and I made a mental note that I would be whipping up a batch of them this year. These Adorable Acorn Donut Treats were easy peasy to put together, using many topping items from my pantry. All I needed were the donuts.
There really isn't a recipe for this, as the process only requires a little bit of melting in the microwave and dipping donut holes into yummy toppings. It's a great treat for your littles to help you with and makes a fun after school snack or fall treat to take to parties.
Here's what you'll need: donut holes (I got the cake-like ones at Wal-mart), microwavable candy melts, chocolate jimmies, sliced almonds, toffee bits (basically any kind of topping you want), and pretzel sticks for stems.
Melt some of the chocolate in the microwave per instructions on the bag. Gently dip the top of a donut hole into the chocolate being careful not to crush the bottom of the "acorn". By the way, I didn't try this, but I wonder if using Cookie Butter or Nutella as the "glue" on the cap of these acorn treats would be good. I might have to try it next time!
Dip the "acorn" into topping of choice, making sure to cover all of the melted chocolate.
Break the pretzel sticks in half, unless you want really long stems. Stick the jagged end into the top of the donut hole to create the stem of the acorn cap.
Plate them up with some faux leaves and serve immediately. You don't want to run the risk of soggy pretzel stems... trust me on this.
Fun enough for the young ones in your life and pretty enough to put on a fall dessert table, these Adorable Acorn Donut Treats are such a simple little dessert to usher in the fall season. I couldn't decide which topping I liked best. Which do you think you'd prefer?
